Local Washington, D.C., Student Awarded International Essential Tremor Foundation Scholarship
Lenexa, Kan. (PRWEB) December 20, 2016 -- The International Essential Tremor Foundation (IETF) is pleased to award a $500 scholarship to student Audrey Weber from Washington, DC, for the 2017-2018 academic year. Weber is one of four students from across the nation to receive a scholarship award from the IETF.
As an incoming freshman to the University of Exeter in the UK, Weber is ready to tackle the challenges of living with her essential tremor (ET) while majoring in economics and finance with international study. During high school, Weber excelled in and outside the classroom. She shined as the student government president and yearbook editor-in-chief while maintaining a 4.17 GPA. She also participated in 4BY4, a business and entrepreneurship opportunity for youth, as technical and finance director and worked at the Sidwell Friends Daycare Center.
Being diagnosed at the age of 2, Weber knows a lifetime of struggles, but she manages to push through each obstacle to excel. “Despite the numerous questions and pain, I have been able to work around my tremor and find methods that allow me to control it, which have all helped me to be successful throughout the majority of my academic career,” Weber said.
Essential tremor is a neurological condition that affects more than 10 million Americans. ET causes rhythmic shaking of the hands, head, and voice. ET is often misdiagnosed as Parkinson’s disease, although eight times more common. ET is characterized by action tremor, making everyday tasks such as eating, drinking, and writing difficult if not impossible. There is no cure for this life-altering condition.
IETF scholarships are awarded to qualified students of all ages who have been diagnosed with ET, to lessen the burden of higher education. The scholarship can be used for supplies, books or tuition at licensed, accredited institutions of higher education (including trade schools) and are paid directly to the educational institution.
