Logan County Zoning Records Fuel Next Phase of Keep Crescent OK Campaign, A Citizen-Driven Environmental Initiative
Crescent, OK (PRWEB) August 04, 2015 -- Keep Crescent OK, a movement committed to raising awareness and inspiring positive environmental action in Crescent, Oklahoma, launches the second phase of its campaign. According to the Logan County Assessor, the property located at 300-block of W. Washington in Crescent is zoned for urban residential platted use.
79-year-old Crescent-native, and retired Langston University professor, Olether L. Patmon-Toliver witnessed large volume water trucks, dirt hauling trucks and flatbeds drive and park near her residence in September 2014. The trucks and activity continue to increase, cause loud, disruptive noise and emit unidentified fumes. Residents report they are awakened daily by the excessive noise and experience headaches from the emissions.
Crescent City Attorney, Randel Shadid, stated in a recent media interview the land at the center of the campaign was zoned for commercial use.
"The property has been zoned for a number of years for this use and you just can't go undo zoning,” Shadid said in the May interview.
Crescent City Ordinances, Section 15-25, "Zoning; Classification of Uses," Item 1. U-1, states permitted uses of residential zoning includes churches, dwellings, schools, fire stations and public facilities, such as playgrounds, libraries, museums, etc.
"Since the activity began, we’ve made several attempts to obtain information from city officials,” said Patmon-Toliver, a Keep Crescent OK organizer. “Thanks to members of the community working together, we now have useful information for the next phase of our efforts."
Organizers behind the campaign are now enlisting support at the state and federal level. Keep Crescent OK is engaging the Environmental Protection Agency and Oklahoma Dept. of Environmental Quality, as well as elected officials, including, U.S. Senator James Inhofe, State Senator A.J. Griffin, State Representative John Pfeiffer and State Representative Jason Murphy, among others.
“Our goal is to preserve Crescent so it can continue to be a safe and healthy place to live,” Toliver said. “If the citizens of Crescent continue to work together to get the attention of state and federal officials, we will be able to see positive changes in our community and preserve our health and our homes.”
Keep Crescent OK has gained traction across social media and launched KeepCrescentOK.com, to raise awareness and get more citizens involved.
