Logan's to Kick Off Plant a Row for the Hungry Event - Grow Local, Closer, Together for Good
Raleigh, NC (PRWEB) February 27, 2016 -- PAR is a national program created by The Garden Writers Association to encourage garden communities and individuals to grow and donate fresh vegetables, fruit and herbs to help people experiencing hunger and food insecurity. According to Interfaith Food Shuttle (IFFS), “In North Carolina, 1 in 4 children is at risk for hunger,” and there are “more than 340 food deserts across 80 counties” in the state. Joshua Logan first launched Raleigh’s PAR program in 2008, collecting 555 lbs. of fresh, local produce. Thanks to the hundreds of individuals, families and community gardeners nearly 135,000 pounds have been grown collected and donated since the inception of the program! Long a provider of educational resources, plants, seeds and growing supplies, Logan’s is proud to serve the community for the eighth year in a row as a produce donation site for growers as well as a collection site for the Interfaith Food Shuttle. IFFS is Logan's local agency “PARtner” that distributes produce to food pantries, soup kitchens, and other hunger relief organizations in our area.
The 8th annual Plant A Row for the Hungry launch event will be held Saturday, March 12th from 11am-3pm. It will feature activities for the whole family, refreshments, educational demonstrations and classes, along with prizes and giveaways to help folks get growing for good. Come early to attend the FREE class at 9 am, Get it in the Ground: Planting the Spring Organic Garden. A rain date will be determined if necessary. Sign up to Plant a Row and receive a starter kit with seeds, planting guides, and organic fertilizer samples courtesy of Espoma Organic. Anyone can sign up to PARticipate: individuals, families, schools, community gardens and businesses, whether planting one pot, one row, one acre or anything in between. Not a gardener? Not a problem! Come out for a fun filled community event. Folks unable to attend the kick-off may sign up in our store to PARticipate at any time during normal business hours.
Growing fresh vegetables, fruits and herbs has many rewards. Families come together in a shared activity, get exercise, develop an appreciation for nature and the environment, give back to the community, and maybe even get kids to eat veggies! One pound of fresh fruits and vegetables supplements four meals for a family in need, so growing local, closer, together can make a real difference.
