According to the Mashable article titled “Pinterest Adds Place Pins for Better Travel Planning,” Place Pins are a new type of Pinterest Pin that allows users to map the location of their other Pinterest posts on a map. For example, if a user pins from their favorite restaurant they can now mark the restaurant’s location on their Place Pins map. Users can post the new Place Pins by clicking “add a map” under a board’s settings tab.
Place Pins also have other uses. The article says users do not have to be at a location to post in to their map. Instead, users can use a search bar to find and place certain locations. This will allow users to create maps of places like their neighborhood, favorite cities, and past vacations. All maps can be shared with friends, and may very well become a useful tool for first time visitors to a location. Place Pins will include that address and phone numbers of businesses that are pinned.
The article also notes that Place Pins are the fourth major Pin added to Pinterest this year. Recipe Pins, Product Pins, and Article Pins are the other three.
Justin Maas, vice president of client relations at Long Island advertising company fishbat, believes that Pinterest is gearing up for an advertising blitz. “Place Pins, like the Recipe, Product and Article Pins before them, are an exciting new tool for Pinterest users to express themselves with. In the case of Place Pins, Pinterest could charge for ‘Suggested Places’ advertisements or more elaborate business details. Pinterest could also allow businesses to promote deals and list coupons, much like FourSquare does today.”
Mass continues, “Social media users do not like to be advertised to. If Pinterest launched these pins with advertising built in, they likely would be shunned by users. Instead, Pinterest is taking the smart approach by releasing their advertisement-focused pins before the company starts to advertise heavily in order to maximize profits.”
