Long Island Network Security Company, Server Bays Best Practices for Business Owners to be More Secure

Server Bays, network services Long Island, explains how you can increase the security of your company data and networks.

The number of news stories about companies being hacked is increasing. In today's online world, it's more important than ever to protect your business. All businesses, no matter how small or large, can take steps to increase their security. Network services firm, Server Bays, shares a handful of easy-to-implement methods of making your business more secure:

Pick your payments provider wisely. Customers are leery about sharing their banking information online, and rightly so. It's important to keep their trust and protect their data. The best way to do that is to partner with an established, reliable, and trustworthy payments provider. When selecting a payments provider, review their terms of service and privacy information. If you're not comfortable with the measures they're taking to protect consumer information, don't use them.

Remember to keep up with basic security practices. Changing your password regularly is a simple fix, but how often do you or your employees change passwords? If the answer is rarely, it's time to make an update. Insist that all staff change their passwords regularly. Require passwords to be at least eight digits long, with at least one symbol, one upper-case letter, and one number.

Add layers of security checkpoints. To protect your business and your consumers' information, require a two-step authentication process. With a two-step identification process, a code is sent to a backup contact method on file. That code is then entered as part of the login process, usually after a username and password has been correctly entered. Codes should only last a few minutes if they're going to serve their purpose as a security measure.

Extend security measures to real life. Cybersecurity is important, but it's not the only security concern you will face. Add a privacy screen to devices if you work in public spaces so people can't read information off your screen. And, be mindful of how you handle business calls in front of others.
