Loring Ward Holds National Education Conference
San Jose, CA (PRWEB) July 11, 2013 -- Loring Ward recently held its annual National Education Conference in Monterey, California for seventy successful advisors. The overall theme of the conference was “Creating Space: For Yourself, For Your Clients.” Highlights included:
• Loring Ward executives Sheldon McFarland, VP, Portfolio Strategy Group, and Matthew Carvalho, Director of Investment Research, speaking about developments in portfolio strategy and LW research group initiatives
• Motivational speaker Juliet Funt, speaking on “White Space,” helping people shift the way they think about daily pressures to free up more time for creative thinking
• Dan Allison, Founder of Feedback Marketing Group, on the best ways to approach referrals and prospecting
• Randal Stutman, Founder of CRA, Inc., on leadership qualities and behaviors based on his many years coaching Fortune 100 top executives and several US presidents
• Barry LaValley, Founder of The Retirement Lifestyle Center on changing your life and the lives of your clients
• New York Times Investigative report and Pulitzer Prize winner Charles Duhigg, on “The Power of Habit”
• Marketing lab for advisor attendees led by Loring Ward staff members and partners from Impact Communications
"At Loring Ward, we believe that education is one of the most important ways we make a difference for advisors," said Steve Atkinson, Executive Vice President, Advisor Relations at Loring Ward. "Providing ideas from some of the best minds in—and outside—financial services can really help advisors better guide and serve clients."
The opening day of the Conference’s General Session was dedicated to Juliet Funt’s presentation and workshop. Using humor (including some clips from her father’s iconic show Candid Camera) and references to the all-too-prevalent wildfire pace of life, Funt led attendees through exercises designed to provide simple solutions to nagging issues such as email overwhelm and 24/7 connectivity. Following Funt, Dan Allison shared research findings on why clients don’t refer, and what advisors can do to change that behavior, including ensuring that clients truly understand the full range of services their advisor provides and know what to say to make the introduction.
Dimensional Fund Advisors’ (DFA) Co-CEO and Chief Investment Officer Eduardo Repetto kicked off the afternoon with a presentation on why DFA is making profitability, which is profit divided by book value, a separate and distinct attribute used to evaluate a company’s stock. This is a significant addition to DFA’s fundamental approach to asset class investing. Loring Ward is among the largest users of Dimension Funds, which are the building blocks of Loring Ward portfolios.
Randall Stutman spoke about the common characteristics of admired leaders, including not being above doing anything they ask of other people and making people feel safe — which he describes as ensuring that "no one crashes and burns" on the leader’s watch. Most importantly, Stutman drew a distinction between successful leaders, generally measured on performance, and admired leaders whose people would follow them anywhere.
During Barry LaValley’s presentation, he delved into the 360 Discovery system that he developed with Loring Ward. Many attendees are already using the techniques and tools available through the program and LaValley offered insights into the role an advisor plays in the life of his/her clients.
Charles Duhigg delivered the closing presentation, a fascinating exploration of habits, why they exist and how they can be changed. The best-selling author of "The Power of Habit: Why We Do What We Do in Life and Business," masterfully combined cutting-edge research and captivating stories to reveal how habits shape our lives, how we can shape our habits and how advisors can help their clients form habits that promote a better financial future..
