Los Angeles Fire Department Foundation Honors 40 LAFD Heroes at Awards Ceremony
Los Angeles, CA (PRWEB) September 27, 2013 -- The Los Angeles Fire Department Foundation hosted a luncheon and awards ceremony to present the fire department's highest honors to 40 firefighters and paramedics who have risked their lives to save others. Awards included Lifetime Achievement, Medal of Valor, Medal of Merit and Letters of Special Commendation. Fire Chief Brian Cummings presented the awards. He commented that, "Firefighters don't like to be called heroes. They feel they are just doing their jobs."
Mayor Eric Garcetti spoke, and was joined in attendance by City Attorney Mike Feuer, City Controller Ron Galperin and City Councilmembers Mitchell Englander, Tom La Bonge and Mitch O'Farrell. Nearly 500 guests were moved and inspired by the stories of sacrifice and bravery narrated by Master of Ceremonies Phillip Palmer.
The Los Angeles Fire Department is dedicated to saving lives, property and the environment. More than 3,000 sworn members respond on a daily basis, with a fire department unit rolling out every 36 seconds. 85% of their calls are for medical emergencies.
The Los Angeles Fire Department Foundation is the major source of private support for the LAFD, providing essential equipment, technology, training and youth programs not included in the city budget.
