Los Angeles Parathyroid Surgeon Responds to Study Indicating Advantages of Minimally Invasive Parathyroid Surgery
Los Angeles, CA (PRWEB) October 23, 2013 -- An article published October 17, 2013 on News-Medical.net discusses the results of a study that compared bilateral neck exploration (BNE) to minimally invasive parathyroidectomy for the treatment of hyperparathyroidism. The study found many advantages to the minimally invasive procedure. Babak Larian, MD, FACS, a renowned parathyroid surgeon in Los Angeles, agrees with the study’s findings.
“I have been performing minimally invasive parathyroidectomy for many years now, and I believe it is usually the safest and best option for treating hyperparathyroidism. While the traditional surgery is just as effective in curing the condition, the risks associated with BNE are higher,” said Dr. Babak Larian.
The study found that patients who underwent minimally invasive parathyroidectomy had a lower incidence of hypocalcemia, a shorter surgery, less pain during the recovery, and a better cosmetic outcome than those who underwent the traditional BNE procedure. The minimally invasive parathyroid removal procedure involves an incision that is generally less than one inch in length and is much less traumatic to the surrounding tissue than BNE.
“Surgical removal of the abnormal parathyroid gland is the only cure for hyperparathyroidism, but patients generally experience a great improvement in symptoms right after surgery. By performing the minimally invasive procedure, the patient has less pain and is able to get back to their normal routine much more quickly than with the more invasive procedure,” explained Dr. Larian.
Dr. Babak Larian is one of only a few surgeons in the country who currently performs the minimally invasive parathyroidectomy. He performs several per week, making him one of the most experienced in the field. By performing intra-operative parathyroid hormone testing, he is able to determine whether the procedure is successful at the time of surgery.
“My goal with every procedure is to, first, treat the condition fully, but also provide the patient with the best possible outcome. By utilizing plastic surgery techniques, the resulting scar is almost invisible,” said Dr. Larian.
