Los Angeles Workers’ Rights Attorney Toni Jaramilla Named to Elite Lawyers List
Los Angeles, CA (PRWEB) July 27, 2017 -- Toni Jaramilla was recently named as one of the Top 75 Attorneys in Employment Law by the Los Angeles Daily Journal. “This honor was one I had been hoping to achieve in my career,” said Jaramilla, a revered workers’ rights attorney who has been practicing law since1994.
The Daily Journal Top 75 Attorneys list is reserved for a very limited and select number of attorneys from one of the oldest and most respected legal publications. When Jaramilla was a young lawyer and new to employment law, the Daily Journal profiled her on its front page with an article entitled “Bar President Is Feisty Advocate: Bar Group Leader Takes Stand For Philippine Equity.” The article illustrated how Jaramilla, then president of the Philippine American Bar Association, earned her reputation as a champion for the underdog and advocate for equality.
The case that exemplified her tenacity and fierce commitment to her clients was a sexual harassment case in which she was, for the first time, before the California Court of Appeal for oral argument, at 9 months’ pregnant and on the very day her baby was due. Her daughter, Serene, was born shortly after and Jaramilla won the case for her client.
“To come full circle and be honored again by the Daily Journal as a Top Attorney is particularly gratifying,” concluded Jaramilla, the daughter of Filipino immigrants. “The struggles of workers, including my father, a farm laborer and WWII veteran, have inspired me to commit myself to helping the working class and people who are discriminated against and exploited in the workplace.”
Jaramilla is a past President and Executive Committee member of the California Employment Lawyers Association(CELA), a statewide organization of attorneys representing employees in wrongful termination, discrimination, harassment, wage and hour and other employment claims. She is also a member of CELA’s Diversity Outreach Committee, which strives to increase cultural and gender diversity in CELA’s membership and leadership as well as in the legal profession of workers’ rights advocates.
Jaramilla was the past Chair of the California State Bar, Labor & Employment Law Section, in which she established a grant program to financially assist local and multicultural bar organizations to provide educational programs to the community on the issues of employment law rights. The grant program continues to this day.
Jaramilla is also a past President and current Board member of the Foundation for Advocacy Inclusion and Resources (FAIR), a nonprofit foundation that provides fellowships and opportunities to law students and attorneys from culturally diverse backgrounds who are committed to social justice and workers’ rights.
