Louisville, KY Personal Injury Attorney at Slechter Law Firm Comments on Report About ‘Drive Down’ Program in Pike County
Louisville, KY (PRWEB) October 31, 2013 -- Louisville, KY car accident lawyer Mat Slechter today said a recent news report about an award-winning program aimed at reducing car accident injuries and fatalities reinforces his law firm’s belief that education initiatives are one of the best ways to keep roads and highways safe.
According to an Associated Press report in Kentucky.com (“Kentucky safety initiative wins national award,” September 4), the “Drive Down” program was honored recently with a special achievement award at a governors Highway Safety Association awards event in San Diego. Authorities credited the program with a nearly 23 percent drop in traffic fatalities in Pike County since the initiative started in April 2012.
Kentucky.com reported that Pike County has consistently ranked among the state’s top three counties for property damage, serious injuries and fatal crashes.
“Serious car accidents can have a profound, long-term impact on the lives of victims and their families throughout Kentucky, and unfortunately accidents happen too often on our roads,” said Slechter, who represents victims of negligence and families who lost loved ones in accidents. “That’s why we are thrilled to see that the Drive Down program has proven to be an effective tool in reducing injuries and fatalities in Pike County. Hopefully, other communities will consider adopting the program or implementing other education initiatives.”
The program received a special achievement award at a Governors Highway Safety Association awards event recently in San Diego, Kentucky.com reported.
According to Kentucky.com, the program involved researching reasons for car accidents and educating drivers about their responsibilities. The program emphasized the importance of using proper restraints in vehicles, according to the article.
According to the Governors Highway Safety Association, Pike County was one of the most unsafe places to be on the road in Kentucky, which spurred the Kentucky Office of Highway Safety to ask officials to craft a plan to address the problem. In addition to having a high number of accidents involving injuries and fatalities, Pike County also was ranked low for seat belt and child safety seat use.
Crash analysis determined that about 44 percent of the county’s crashes were the result of driver inattention, followed by speeding and aggressive driving, according to the GHSA.
“Educational campaigns are necessary to remind drivers that their careless actions can have serious consequences,” Slechter said. “Too often, people will not think twice about texting behind the wheel, speeding or driving aggressively. If they cause an accident, they must be held accountable. Personal injury lawyers can help victims pursue compensation and closure and send a message that negligent actions behind the wheel will not be tolerated.”
