Louisville’s Becker Law Office, PLC/WDRB Present ‘Hidden Hero Award’ to Shelbyville High School Student
Louisville, KY (PRWEB) October 04, 2013 -- Jessica Collins, a high school student who teamed with her grandmother to launch Shelbyville’s A Place to Sleep – an organization that matches needy children with new beds – has been named September’s “Hidden Hero Award” winner by Becker Law Office, PLC, and WDRB.
The monthly “Hidden Hero Award,” co-sponsored by the Louisville law firm and local TV station, honors citizens of Louisville and surrounding counties who make a difference in their community. Each month’s winner is chosen from online submissions and receives $500 in cash.
“We are thrilled to make this small gesture recognizing Jessica’s amazing efforts to help children in need,” said Kevin Renfro, the Managing Partner of Becker Law Office. “She is a very inspiring young lady.”
Collins was 10-year-old elementary student when she and her grandmother, Lynn Whittaker, donated their first bed to a child in their community. Collins had just learned that some of her classmates didn’t have a bed to sleep in at night.
“We talked to the family resource center at the elementary school I went to, and they gave us a family that needed help, and for Christmas that year, we gave them a bed,” Collins said.
Since that first donation in 2009, A Place to Sleep has donated beds, mattresses and bedding for 251 needy children in Shelby County. Every school in the Shelby County Public Schools district has had at least one child receive a bed because of the program.
“Divorces – one parent will run off with all the furniture. It’s hard to believe but there are all kinds of reasons why kids don’t have a bed of their own to sleep in,” Whittaker said, adding that children who have received beds have shown improvement in classroom performance.
“They’re able to stay awake in class, their grades have improved, their self esteem has improved,” Whittaker said.
The $500 “Hidden Hero Award,” courtesy of Becker Law Office, PLC, will help A Place to Sleep to provide more beds for more children. According to Collins, there were 23 names on the organization’s waiting list through mid-September.
