Luxury Chess Set Manufacturer, The House of Staunton, Shares Their Experience Working with Fossilized 40,000 Year-old Woolly Mammoth Ivory
HUNTSVILLE, Ala., Oct. 5, 2017 /PRNewswire-iReach/ -- Wood chess set manufacturer, The House of Staunton, explains their humanitarian mission to produce ivory chessmen without endangering the planet's wildlife.
Ivory has been used to make chessmen for centuries. In the 12th century, Lewis chessmen were carved from walrus ivory. In the Victorian and Georgian periods, gentry purchased ivory chess sets to display their wealth. Today, chess players purchase ethically-farmed ivory chess sets for their beauty, and for the experience of playing with ivory.
Ivory's popularity is, in part, due to its beauty. The color and design of ivory chessmen make for beautiful home décor. However, it is the tactile experience of playing chess with a set of fine Ivory chessmen that cannot be equaled.
In order to maintain the tradition of ivory chessmen, and supply chess players with a high quality ivory chess set, The House of Staunton decided to work with extinct mammoth tusks. The decision to use the ivory of extinct mammals allowed The House of Staunton to continue using one of chess's finest materials without endangering any animals.
The House of Staunton began their mission to farming and produce ethical ivory chess sets in the tar pits of Siberia. They partnered with two of Russia's most talented artists, extracted the ivory from the tar pits, and responsibly crafted exquisite ivory chessmen.
The use of 10,000 to 20,000 year-old mammoth ivory was made possible by rising temperatures which melted the tundra's permafrost and exposed well-preserved animal remains. It was also made possible by the fact that tar pits are an oxygen-free environment. The lack of oxygen, the element that breaks down organic material, effectively preserved the mammoths and their tusks for thousands of years.
The House of Staunton is proud to maintain the tradition of producing ivory chessmen in an ethical manner. Protecting animals poached for their ivory is of the utmost importance to the luxury chess set manufacturer.
