Lynne Handy Tells Tale of Family Dysfunction in New Novel
Champaign, IL. (PRWEB) January 06, 2014 -- “In the Time of Peacocks” (published by iUniverse), written by Lynne Handy, tells the story of Cate Miller (once known as Caterina Montserrat y Vega) who struggles to find her true identity. The novel covers a span of nearly 60 years (1939-1995) and takes place in Mexico, Indiana, Texas and the upper peninsula of Michigan.
Caterina is happily unaware that she is a kidnapping victim and not the biological child of her Mexican mother and father. When she is injured in an automobile crash at age 15, California authorities identify her as Cate Miller, a girl taken 10 years earlier from an Indiana farm family. Cate returns to her parents and tries to accept their values, but while in Mexico, she was Catholic, high-spirited and romantic, and she is often at odds with the drab, godless existence of her farm family. Against a backdrop of the American civil rights era and the rise of feminism, Cate fights for spiritual growth, as well as a place in the world. Her journey takes her though marital disharmony, a satisfying teaching career, uneasy motherhood and a life-changing affair with a black civil rights activist.
Cate’s life struggle is not unlike that of many American women who have tested the limits to see if they could “have it all,” but one aspect is surely different; she comes to understand the meaning of acceptance from the poems of Federico García Lorca.
