According to the organization, the honor of being offered membership is limited to attorneys “who display skill, civility and integrity, to help younger attorneys achieve a higher level of trial advocacy and to educate the public about the vital importance of the Seventh Amendment.”

ABOTA selects members on an invitation-only basis among elite trial lawyers who demonstrate the highest levels of integrity and skill. Membership is granted through a lengthy process in which an individual must be nominated, submit an application and meet the criteria for trial experience, be vetted by a membership committee and be elected by a 75% vote of the ABOTA membership. Applicants must also be able to list 10 civil jury trials to jury verdict or hung jury as lead counsel.
Ken Patterson, a veteran trial lawyer with more than 36 years of experience, primarily focuses his practice on defending clients in personal injury and medical malpractice cases. Over his decades of practice, he has tried cases in 20 different Texas counties and has completed 76 medical malpractice trials. He has a remarkable track record of success, having achieved a favorable verdict for his clients in over 96 percent of cases tried.
