Macmillan Education Offers $5,000 Grant For Cross-Sector STEM Collaboration
New York, NY (PRWEB) August 05, 2014 -- Macmillan Education, the global education division of Macmillan Science and Education, today announced a $5,000 grant program for attendees of the second annual Executive STEM Summit, hosted by Macmillan Education and Scientific American. The goal of the grant is to encourage and promote collaboration between different business sectors -- including academia, educational technology, and policy -- that each have a stake in improving science and technology education.
The Macmillan Education Connections Grant, supported by the higher education division of Macmillan Education, will fund one highly-qualified and focused idea for improving science and technology education that may not otherwise be funded through departmental funding or other granting bodies.
The grant is introduced at a time in which the demand for STEM jobs outstrips the supply. While STEM jobs have increased more than 30% since 2000, science, technology, engineering, and math education in most parts of the country are lagging behind international standards.
“We need to find more opportunities to improve education and learning in STEM fields across all sectors,” said Susan Winslow, VP of Marketing at Macmillan Education. “This annual summit and The Connections Grant complement Macmillan Education’s continued efforts to support STEM education.”
The annual Executive STEM Summit was created with the belief that collaboration between stakeholders -- from private companies, startups, government agencies, and educators -- is key to securing student interest in STEM, improving educational programs in math and sciences, and hedging for a future of even more science- and tech-driven opportunities. The focus of this year’s program is “The Science of Learning” and speakers include a Nobel Laureate, the Executive Director for STEM initiatives at the US Department of Education, professors, journalists, researchers and entrepreneurs.
In order to apply for the grant, teams of at least two attendees from differing sectors need to submit a three-page proposal detailing the collaboration and how it will either investigate a new teaching strategy, conduct research on learning, or produce materials that will support STEM education. The grant and the application process are subject to official rules that Macmillan Education will issue.
The Macmillan Education Advisory Board will use the following criteria to make the awards:
- The proposed collaboration addresses an important STEM teaching issue or advances positive changes in STEM instruction
- The idea proposed is creative and original
- The proposal includes a detailed plan to evaluate the success of the innovation or idea
Initial submissions are due September 15th, 2014 and the grant will be awarded on October 1, 2014.
