Macmillan Learning Appoints Adam Black as Chief Learning Officer
New York, NY (PRWEB) September 06, 2016 -- Macmillan Learning, a leading educational solutions provider, today announced the appointment of Dr. Adam Black as Chief Learning Officer. Dr. Black comes to Macmillan with over 25 years of success in learning science, product innovation, efficacy, and analytics that will bolster the expertise and vision of Macmillan’s research and digital development teams.
“In order to be truly effective in our partnership with educators and administrators, we need to continuously evaluate how today’s learners behave and learn,” said Macmillan Learning CEO Ken Michaels. “But exploring big data isn’t enough. We need to understand how our products work with each student, each instructor, and within each institution. Adam has been a pioneer in efficacy and product development and he will be instrumental to the future of Macmillan Learning .”
Dr. Black is recognized as a pioneer of improving learner outcomes - from identifying promising areas of learning science to leading the development of market-leading, high-impact digital products, and spearheading novel approaches for assessing impact, including two analytics innovations with patents pending.
"I come from a family of educators and believe in the pivotal role of great instructors. So, I've always looked for how technology and practical applications of learning science can be used to enhance teaching and improve results for individual learners,” Dr. Black noted. “Given my background in quantitative science, I naturally look for evidence for what works and have learned how essential it is to challenge trends in "big data" with specific, local context."
Dr. Black has a BSc from the University of Edinburgh and a PhD in Astrophysics from the University of Cambridge. He began his career at Cambridge University Press before moving to Pearson to lead higher-education science, global digital innovation, technology for language learning and, most recently, efficacy and research. He will work directly with Mr. Michaels at Macmillan Learning.
"The explosion in use of digital learning tools in education opens up entirely new channels for us to empirically research how each learner learns and to use these insights to improve what we do in order to better serve future learners,” said Dr. Black. “Macmillan Learning has an ambitious vision for digital learning that aligns with where I see significant opportunities to improve education. I'm thrilled to be joining their talented team at such an exciting time."
