MailChannels Joins the Anti-Phishing Working Group As A Sponsoring Member
Vancouver, Canada (PRWEB) December 02, 2015 -- MailChannels, the leading provider of outbound anti-spam technology for Internet infrastructure, today announced it has joined forces with the Anti-Phishing Working Group (APWG) as a sponsoring member. APWG is the global industry, law enforcement, and government coalition focused on unifying the global response to cybercrime through development of data resources, data standards and model response systems and protocols for private and public sectors.
“Phishing” is the attempt to acquire sensitive information for malicious purposes by masquerading as a trustworthy entity. According to Phishing.org, the term “phishing” was first used and recorded on January 2, 1996. Since then, incidents of phishing have increased each year, gaining widespread recognition in 2003 when a phishing attack on PayPal enabled cybercriminals to compromise thousands of PayPal accounts, leading to substantial financial losses for the company.
Cybercriminals often use one phishing attack as the jumping off point for another. In the first attack, email recipients are duped into revealing their email account credentials. A second wave follows, in which the attacker uses the stolen email accounts to send phishing messages to other victims, seeking more valuable data such as bank account login details.
“2015 has been a year of unprecedented data breaches, the result of which has been the exposure of millions of email addresses linked to personal data. These email addresses are increasingly being used by cybercriminals in targeted phishing campaigns to collect additional personal data used to compromise new networks and for identity theft, extortion and other malicious acts, ” said Ken Simpson, co-founder and CEO of MailChannels. “As the leading provider of outbound email security for hosting providers, we see and stop hundreds of phishing attacks daily, and generate intelligence on the perpetrators of phishing that is helpful to law enforcement.”
MailChannels protects the online reputation of hosting service providers by stopping the flow of phishing attacks and spam from their servers. By stopping outgoing spam and phishing, MailChannels improves the service provider’s reputation with email receivers, who are then more likely to pass on messages to their own users rather than sending them to the spam folder. MailChannels sponsorship and work with the Anti-Phishing Working Group will serve to more aggressively deter this type of cybercrime; data from APWG will also help MailChannels do a better job of detecting and stopping phishing on behalf of its own customers.
