TAMPA, Fla. (PRWEB) March 16, 2018 -- MaintenX provides safe and effective maintenance for customers. Providing safe service means ensuring chemical products used for cleaning, repair or installation work are properly handled and stored. The third week in March is dedicated to National Poison Prevention, and MaintenX wants to share tips for creating a safe work environment for local businesses.
"From cleaning sprays and adhesives to sealants and paint, there are numerous office and maintenance supplies that should be treated with caution and handled carefully,” said Bill Schaphorst, MaintenX’s VP of Business Development. “Our technicians pride themselves on safely using and storing supplies that can be hazardous when mishandled.”
Each year, thousands of people experience an unintentional chemical poisoning on the job. Here are some tips for creating a safe environment for your employees:
• Know How Poisoning Happens: Exposure to poisons can happen through inhalation, ingestion, and skin or eye contact. To reduce chances of accidental poisonings, provide proper ventilation, restrict access to dangerous materials, and clearly label poisonous items. Educating your workforce on the various substances that can poison people helps to create a frontline defense against danger.
• Proper Container, Proper Place: Make sure poisonous products have clear labels and are kept in original containers. They should also be stored away from food and beverages as well as dishware like mugs and plates.
• Protect Yourself: In some fields, the use of hazardous products and chemicals is necessary. There are a plethora of personal protective equipment (PPE) options available. If you know your employees will be handling these types of materials, ensure they have access and are required to wear PPE such as boots, gloves, aprons or masks.
• Know What to Do: Accidents happen, so it's important to ensure staff knows what to do in case of an accidental poisoning. Train employees to use wash stations and other safeguards. Teach staff to post emergency numbers in a conspicuous place. Encourage workers to hold each other accountable to work safely and speak out if they witness unsafe work practices.
