As the seasons change and allergens increase, it is important to understand how to increase indoor air quality in the home. Indoor air quality can be lowered by several factors to include dust, smoke, dander, allergens, viruses and bacteria.

Dust your home frequently
Dust can cause allergies to flare up. Spring may be known for spring-cleaning, but for people who suffer from allergies this takes on a whole new meaning. If you suffer from allergies, be sure to dust your home frequently to cut down on the number of allergens in the air.

Replace filters
At the start of every new season you should inspect and replace the filters in your home. Filters are an important part of the home. They trap dust and other allergens and keep them from entering through the ductwork and into the home. Consider using HEPA filters. HEPA filters are more likely to collect small pollutants and particles.

Clean linens
To control dust particles in the home be sure to clean linens at lease once a week. Cleaning the linens will reduce the amount of dust particles in the air. Avoid using feather duvets if you suffer from allergies and try using synthetic material instead.

Clean or remove carpets
Carpets act like filters and trap dander and hair, especially dog and cat hair increased by animals loosing their winter coats. Vacuum rugs and carpets to reduce the amount of dander in the air and trapped in the carpet and rug fibers. Consider replacing carpets with hardwood or laminate flooring.

Wash the dog
Pets shed their winter coats in the springtime leaving hair and dander everywhere in the home. Wash them regularly to keep the dander low and manageable.
