Marble Media LLC’s PortNoise.com Online Magazine Looks at the Growing Menace of Lion Fish in the Atlantic Ocean
Fort Lee, NJ (PRWEB) July 24, 2013 -- An exotic species of fish native to the Pacific and Indian Oceans has been wreaking environmental havoc in the Atlantic Ocean. According to a report from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Association (NOAA), although they pose no danger to humans, lion fish are fast becoming an ecological nightmare; since the lion fish has no natural predators in the Atlantic, their numbers have increased quickly.
In the latest blog From Port/Noise Magazine dated July 18, 2013 and titled, “Beware the Lion Fish”, guest blogger Liz Ernst discusses the NOAA report on the exotic fish that made it to the U.S. east coast in the early 1990’s as they became a popular import for the exotic fish market.
Equipped with venomous spines that hurt if they pinch you, the species may be harmless to humans but these carnivores have a voracious appetite, and they consume a variety of smaller fish in huge volumes, and they are damaging Florida’s East Coast’s delicate ecosystem.
“Researchers trying to get a grip on the spread of lion fish in the Atlantic (and now spreading into the Caribbean) find stomachs packed with fish swallowed whole,” Ernst says. “The result is an alarming number of the small fish are being depleted, fish that are integral to the eco-balance of the Southern Atlantic, including its reef systems.”
It wasn’t until 2007 that researchers first discovered the species’ presence in the Atlantic. As their numbers continue to increase exponentially, marine biologists are scrambling to find some answers for shutting them down. They are studying lion fish habitats in the Pacific in order to isolate whatever it is that keeps their numbers in check in those waters.
Although lion fish can be eaten by humans, there is not a huge demand for them on the seafood market. Authorities in coastal areas experiencing a lion fish population explosion have organized events in which fishermen try to catch as many as possible to keep their numbers down. Unfortunately, this technique is hardly enough to curb the ever-increasing spread of lion fish in the Atlantic.
