Marianjoy Scholarship Program Issues 24 Scholarships to Students with Physical Disabilities
Wheaton, IL (PRWEB) June 17, 2015 -- The Marianjoy Scholarship Program awarded $60,000 in scholarships to 24 young men and women with disabilities from the Chicagoland area pursuing post-high school education at a reception held Wednesday, June 10.
The awards presentation also celebrated the life of Bruce Schurman, the former Marianjoy President and CEO who initiated the scholarship program in 1994. Schurman passed away in January at the age of 76.
“Bruce established the scholarship program with the belief that the pursuit of a college degree was a challenge in and of itself, yet doing so while living with a physical disability required an even greater degree of determination, stamina, and focus,” said current Marianjoy President and CEO Kathleen Yosko. “This year’s exceptional scholars embody those characteristics, and we’re proud to stand behind them in their educational pursuits.”
The 2015 scholars, many of whom are current or former Marianjoy Rehabilitation Hospital patients, demonstrated academic excellence and are attending colleges and universities across the country, including Yale University, University of Illinois, Purdue University, the University of Alabama, Kansas State University, St. Louis University, North Central College, Valparaiso University and Elmhurst College, among others.
For over 40 years, Marianjoy has remained an advocate for individuals living with disabilities. The Marianjoy Scholarship Program was established to provide financial assistance to students with disabilities, and an independent selection committee carefully selects from a large pool of applicants each year. This year’s recipients include young men and women studying architecture, literature, medicine, computer science, broadcasting and teaching.
