Maricopa Community Colleges Foundation Honors Linda Mazon Gutierrez at 10th Annual Heroes of Education Event
Tempe, AZ (PRWEB) April 23, 2015 -- The Maricopa Community Colleges Foundation (MCCF), the fundraising arm of the Maricopa Community Colleges, awards the Heroes of Education award each year to a champion of higher education in Arizona.
This year marked the 10th anniversary of this event which was held at the Sheraton in Downtown Phoenix on April 16, 2015. More than 440 community and business leaders were in attendance this year and over $120,000 in scholarship funds were raised.
Linda Mazon Gutierrez, President CEO of the Hispanic Women’s Corporation (HWC), was recognized for her personal and professional commitment to support Maricopa Community College students and educational opportunities. Ms. Gutierrez and the HWC have successfully partnered with the Maricopa Community Colleges Foundation since 2006 to provide scholarships for graduates of the Maricopa Community Colleges Achieving a College Education (ACE) program.
Ms. Gutierrez has served as the congressional and state legislative liaison on health care issues for the State of Arizona Health Care Cost Containment System for 25 years and prior to her retirement in 2007 from state government served as the liaison to the National Governor’s Association in Washington D.C. Ms. Gutierrez is married to former State Senator Jaime Gutierrez and together they have four children.
Also recognized at a special ceremony prior to the event were 10 College Heroes, one from each of the Maricopa Community Colleges, representing individuals, organizations or companies who have distinguished themselves by providing exceptional support and/or service to one of the Colleges.
Those honored at the event include: The Honorable Adolfo Gamez (Estrella Mountain Community College), Elizabeth Acord Maribito (GateWay Community College), Dr. Ruth Tan Lim (Mesa Community College), Glendale Rotary (Glendale Community College), Warren Buxton (Paradise Valley Community College), Chief Kara Kalkbrenner (Phoenix College), The Honorable Harry Mitchell (Rio Salado College), Marshall Trimble (Scottsdale Community College) and Dr. Yvonne D. Montiel (South Mountain Community College).
“We are grateful for our community’s commitment to build the scholarship support that we provide to students in the 10 Maricopa Community Colleges,” said Dr. Steve Helfgot, CEO of MCCF. “This dinner is just one of the many fundraising efforts of our Foundation, District and Colleges. It’s an investment not only in our students, but in the future well being and vitality of our community. “
Since its inception in 2006, the Heroes of Education event has raised over $1 million in scholarship funds to support Maricopa Community College students.
