Marine Biologist Turns US Wool into Gold with Family Business
(PRWEB) July 31, 2013 -- Ferndale Fiber makers of Potluck custom wool roving celebrates 13 years of hard work and success this month. Their formula for success has been to keep things simple, streamlined and local.
Kathy Green was once a Marine Biologist working with aquatic life and ecosystems. She has always been a wool enthusiast with a handful of sheep at her small ranch. One day, she decided she wanted to do more with the wool and purchased a used nine-ton wool carding machine. Her husband Dave handles machine maintenance and was able to fix up the used machine like new.
She now runs a full blown wool mill processing up to a hundred pounds of wool a day. She first started out processing local fleeces in small batches for nearby alpaca and sheep farmers. Today they focus entirely on large batches of their product which are 8oz balls of custom dyed and carded wool ready for hand spinning. They do nearly everything on site which has allowed her to keep costs down and pricing competitive even with rising wool prices.
"The Potluck Roving is a high quality, locally processed, locally dyed and US grown wool, we love it!" says Travis Romine owner of Paradise Fibers. "We love supporting local business and US wool and the colors are terrific!" Kathy volunteers, and is on the advisory board at the local aquarium and marine life center in Bellingham in her free time.
Paradise Fibers has been in business since 1997 selling yarn, spinning wheels and weaving looms. The company is family owned and operated and consists of a variety of Romine family members young and old with a sprinkle of dedicated fiber junkies and stunt men.
