Marine Biologists/Ocean Explorers Sylvia Earle of Mission Blue and Lance Morgan of Marine Conservation Institute to Speak at IMPAC3
San Francisco, CA (PRWEB) October 22, 2013 -- Celebrated marine biologists Dr. Sylvia Earle (founder of Mission Blue) and Dr. Lance Morgan (president of Marine Conservation Institute) are featured speakers at IMPAC3 (International Marine Protected Areas Congress) in Marseille, France, on October 22, 2013. These eminent scientists will discuss the urgent need to establish a worldwide system of marine protected areas.
Dr. Earle will host “Hope for the Ocean with Dr. Sylvia Earle” during which she will unveil Mission Blue’s new world map of 50 Hope Spots ― places of special significance in the ocean where Mission Blue will focus its effort. Dr. Morgan will be discussing the Global Ocean Refuge System (GLORES), a comprehensive science-based strategy for marine protected areas worldwide. (Please see related news release today.)
Mission Blue and Marine Conservation Institute have collaborated on marine protected areas for several years and Dr. Earle is on the board of Marine Conservation Institute.
Every four years, IMPAC brings together major maritime stakeholders from around the globe, beyond national or sectorial boundaries, to assist in the conservation and sustainable development of the oceans.
About Mission Blue
Mission Blue is a global initiative of the Sylvia Earle Alliance, a 501c3 organization, which was formed in response to Sylvia Earle's 2009 TED Prize wish. Dr. Earle urged people "to use all means at your disposal―films, expeditions, the web, new submarines― to create a campaign to ignite public support for a global network of marine protected areas; Hope Spots large enough to save and restore the blue heart of the planet."
Currently, the Mission Blue community includes 50+ respected ocean conservation groups and like-minded organizations ― from large multinational companies to individual scientific teams doing important research. For more information, please go to: http://www.mission-blue.org.
