Raleigh, North Carolina (PRWEB) July 16, 2014 -- On June 13, 2014, GlobalGolf and Hope for the Warriors hosted a golf event honoring eight Marines from Camp Lejeune at the Hope Valley Country Club in Durham, North Carolina. In attendance were Zack Veasey, GlobalGolf’s VP of Merchandising; Jack Marin, Chairman of Hope For The Warriors; and A.J. Bonar, renowned golf instructor and author of The Truth about Golf.
The Marines participating had all recently returned from combat. Each Marine had sustained injuries to varying degrees in the line of duty, both physical and physiological, turning the everyday actions such as walking or tying shoes into difficult endeavors.
The goal of Hope for the Warriors is to help these individuals improve their lives. The organization was founded by military wives who witnessed the lasting damage and pain war inflicted on their spouses. Hope for the Warriors assists with a wide range of needs including critical care, family support, scholarships, and other measures to help improve quality of life. For this event, the sport of golf became a key component of the physical and psychological recovery for these Marines. Challenges found on the golf course support their rehabilitation, mental health, and provided a distraction and relief from their individual daily struggles.
During a heartfelt moment of the weekend, each Marine shared their favorite golf memories, and discussed the game's significance in their lives. Mr. Veasey and Mr. Marin took the opportunity to share their own personal stories.
"The first thing I ever read about Hope for the Warriors was their mission statement [which] starts with the words, 'to enhance the quality of life.' Once I read that, I knew we had to be involved." Mr. Veasey said. "This is just a small token of gratitude for all of you. We thank you from the bottom of our hearts for all that you've done for us."
As part of the event, Mr. Veasey and Mr. Marin presented each Marine with an assortment of golf equipment, including a new golf bag made for the occasion. The Marines were treated to a golf clinic from Mr. Bonar, during which he provided instruction about technique as well as equipment. The Marines were given the opportunity to apply the instruction and use the equipment while playing a round on the Donald Ross-designed course at Hope Valley.
The highlight of the trip occurred on day two at the 114th U.S. Open Championship in Pinehurst, North Carolina. The USGA invented the soldiers to enjoy a day at one of golf's most historic courses watching the best golfers in the world compete before returning to Camp Lejeune.
Chasing a little white ball around a plush green golf course becomes a form of therapy and a way to experience some normalcy. Every one of these Marines wants to serve and be active in their community, and these American heroes are well on their way, with every swing, to restoring a fulfilling life.
