Ontarians should be aware that the CRA will never ask for a SIN number and is required to explain the origins of the debts without you fearing repercussions.
Several Windsor, Ontario residents were contacted over a month ago from scammers requesting payments for non-existent debts through gift cards, money wires or bank drafts. In some cases, only personal information and SIN numbers were requested. “When most people get a call from the tax man, they will listen,” says Toronto accountant Mark Feldstein, Founder of Mark Feldstein and Associates. “Yet, Canadians should be warned that the CRA will never ask for your Sin n=Number or other personal information since they already have it on file. Obviously, another red flag would be the CRA asking for payment via gift cards.”
