Marstel-Day Awards 2nd Annual Scholarship to University of Mary Washington Student
Fredericksburg, VA (PRWEB) December 09, 2015 -- University of Mary Washington (UMW) junior, Maggie Magliato, accepted the "Innovation in Environmental Stewardship Award" during Marstel-Day's annual "Green Gala" event on December 8 at the Olde Silk Mill. Marstel-Day established the $2,500 cash award in 2014 to reward a rising senior at UMW.
Maggie has focused her environmental studies on a double-major in biology and environmental science. A staunch supporter of the environment, she retains membership in the UMW President's Council on Sustainability, Green Living (a Conceptual Learning Community), and volunteers with Tree Fredericksburg, aiding with their tree plantings. Her winning project proposes the creation of a "pollinator walk" on campus that will include informative signs enabling students and community members to learn about plants important to our area's pollinators (bees, birds, butterflies, and other insects). She will work closely with UMW Landscape Director, Joni Wilson.
Marstel-Day's judges chose Maggie as the recipient of the award for the 2015-2016 cycle because of the timely and crucial importance of this issue and the positive impact her project will have on the community. While pollinator populations continue to decline, this project will highlight their importance in everyday life and show people how they can help even from their own backyards.
Marstel-Day created this award to encourage students to think creatively about environmental challenges that face our world. Last year's recipients focused their projects on ocean plastics, developing forms of information available about them and solutions that different countries use to reduce them. Rebecca Rubin shared, "Seeing creative solutions and an effort to tackle these large environmental challenges is why we started this award."
The "Green Gala" represents Marstel-Day's annual "Party with a Purpose," which raises funds to support Tree Fredericksburg and the National Wildlife Refuge Association.
