Maryville University to Host ‘Media Now STL’ Summer Program for High School Students
St. Louis, MO (PRWEB) January 21, 2015 -- “Media Now is a nationally-known program for high school students interested in digital communication and media and it is an honor that they have selected Maryville University as their host campus,” says Rebecca Dohrman, PhD, undergraduate program director and assistant professor of communication. “We are thrilled to welcome Media Now students, teachers, and staff to our campus this summer for what promises to be an extraordinary experience.”
The four-day boot camp draws students, advisers and leaders in scholastic journalism to work in multimedia, design, photography, web development, video, writing and editorial leadership.
“We couldn’t be more excited about all that’s happening with Media Now for this summer,” says Aaron Manfull, co-director of Media Now STL, high school adviser at Francis Howell North High School and digital media chair for the Journalism Education Association. “We work with the most motivated students, passionate advisers and talented staff to present this camp each summer. To celebrate five years is an exciting mark for us.”
Media Now STL has offered instruction and inspiration by top journalism professionals from such respected news organizations as the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, Riverfront Times, Los Angeles Times, The Dallas Morning News and The Indianapolis Star. Professors at the collegiate level and influential high school advisers from award-winning programs in Nebraska, Indiana, Colorado, California and St. Louis also bring their expertise to the program. The award-winning staff includes some key members of the National JEA leadership team.
“Media Now is one of the most impressive workshops because the courses offered are fresh, the instructors are top-notch and the challenges are authentic,” says Mark Newton, JEA president. “I love that the instructors are focused on the future, not the past. Plus, the energy and enthusiasm is everywhere — from the workshop as a whole, to the classes, to the assignments.”
Participants learn innovative storytelling skills needed to provide news for today’s readers using resources available to them right now. Media Now STL offers 13 course options, new media breakouts and professional critiques. Campers, both students and advisers, walk away with tangible products of their work.
