Mashable Announces Rebecca Ruiz as New Features Writer with Focus on Gender and Equality
New York, NY (PRWEB) July 08, 2014 -- Mashable, the leading media company for the Connected Generation and the voice of digital culture, announced today that it has hired Rebecca Ruiz as Features Writer.
From the “Lean In” movement to the Hobby Lobby Supreme Court decision to the UCSB shooter’s horrifying brand of sexism, issues involving gender, sexuality, and equality continue to grow in urgency. In her new role as Features Writer, Ruiz will further Mashable's commitment to these key issues.
“As Mashable grows as a media organization, we will be tackling stronger and often more complex social issues with innovative approaches to reporting,” said Jim Roberts, Chief Content Officer and Executive Editor of Mashable. “With Rebecca’s background and experience, we believe that Mashable will offer a strong and clear voice on some of the most pressing issues of the workplace, of the board room, and of family life.”
Ruiz joins Mashable, having served as a contributor for Al Jazeera America, The Atlantic, Slate, The Verge, and MSNBC.com to name a few, specializing in reporting on the marginalized, covering everything from mental illness in the military to the science of suffering.
Prior to her role as contributor, she was a reporter for NBC News where she covered domestic military and veteran issues, including PTSD treatment, suicide prevention efforts, veteran transition programs, and family coping. Previously, she was Special Reports Project Director at The American Prospect, overseeing editorial content and managing fundraising for each issue, and a staff writer for Forbes, focusing on personal and consumer health.
In 2012, Ruiz completed a Rosalynn Carter Mental Health Journalism Fellowship where she reported on a series of stories about epigenetics and mental health.
Ruiz is a graduate of Sarah Lawrence College and University of California, Berkeley where she received her Masters in Journalism.
Ruiz joins Mashable on July 14 and will be based in the San Francisco office. She can be found on Twitter at @rebecca_ruiz.
