Massachusetts Is 1# in Nation for Opiate Overdoses
Boston, MA (PRWEB) April 30, 2015 -- Massachusetts’s overdose death rate was doubled in comparison to the national average in 2013, according to a recent article published by Boston on April 13th. The Bay State suffered 978 overdose deaths in 2013 alone. Overdoses and fatal opiate overdoses by county recorded in 2013 are staggering. Out of 100,000 residents, 118 overdose and 21.3 fatally overdose in Bristol; 119 overdose, 15.8 fatality rate in Suffolk; 123 overdoses and fatal death rate of 16.1 in Essex; 167 overdoses and 10.8 death rate in Middlesex; 112 overdose and 13.8 death rate in Worcester.
Some are clamoring for the state to press charges on drug dealers. Boston states, “Colonel Timothy P. Alben tweeted that charging heroin dealers with murder or manslaughter should be part of the ‘strategy to attack [the] problem’ of opiate abuse,” This suggestion is well received by some, but proves difficult to implement. County District Attorney David F. Capeless is quoted by Boston, “these are extremely difficult cases to develop evidence in that would result in a viable prosecution.”

An associate comments, “Massachusetts, and especially the Boston area, has become a hub for heroin. It’s not a secret that we need help controlling the opiate. Heroin addicts are essentially thrown to the wolves here because there aren’t many treatment clinics offering medically assisted drug treatment. Politics and abstinence based programs have really influenced treatment plans- and not for the better. Abstinence based programs shun medically assisted drug treatment because they don’t consider it ‘clean’ or ‘drug free.’ But medically assisted drug treatment helps prevent relapse in ways abstinence based treatment can’t hold a candle to. Overdoses are all preventable deaths, and we can’t let our moral persuasions get in the way of treating addiction.”
