Mastery Learning Now Supported By JogNog
Wakefield, MA (PRWEB) April 22, 2015 -- Standardized testing and the Common Core can put pressure on teachers to “teach to the test” and leave students focused more on test-taking strategies than on learning. Students may perform adequately on the day of the test but they often don’t master larger concepts and can forget what they’ve learned shortly after taking the test. The JogNog Assessment System addresses this problem by focusing on “Mastery Learning”.
“Mastery Learning” is at the opposite end of the learning spectrum of “teaching to the test”. It was first proposed by Benjamin Bloom in the late 1960s. In Mastery Learning, students are encouraged to have mastery of material through small, progressive steps, where evidence of mastery of each level is required before the next step is attempted. Mastery Learning has been difficult to accomplish in practice because of its requirements for personalized teaching and assessment. With online systems like JogNog, these goals can be realized. JogNog provides level by level review for students, with progress possible only through evidenced-based accomplishment. Material that students previously found challenging or failed to answer correctly is reintroduced in future levels.
“With our research into improving standardized test scores in science, we observed that students performed better when challenging material was reintroduced a short time later,” said Stephen Smith, CEO and co-founder of JogNog. “It is a simple and workable way to use the ‘spacing effect’ from learning research that shows reintroduction of challenging material helps the learner achieve mastery.”
Repeating difficult questions helps students review important material without having to repeat an entire quiz. Students gain a sense of accomplishment as they see themselves correctly answering questions that had previously stumped them.
