Mayor Fiorentini Celebrates the Week of the Young Child at Little Sprouts
Haverhill, MA (PRWEB) April 08, 2014 -- Little Sprouts, a local leader of early education and child care, welcomed Mayor James Fiorentini and City Counselor Thomas Sullivan into their Haverhill preschool classrooms on Monday, April 7th to commence festivities for the Week of the Young Child (WOYC). The Week of the Young Child is an annual celebration sponsored by the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC), designed to raise awareness and advocacy surrounding the importance of early childhood learning programs.
The Week of the Young Child serves to focus public attention on the needs of young children and their families. Early education programs across the country will celebrate WOYC under the theme, “The Early Years are the Learning Years.” The theme showcases the importance of early childhood educators at the heart of quality learning.
Mayor Fiorentini and City Counselor Sullivan were excited to promote the Week of the Young Child by joining forces with preschool teachers to lead story time. Mayor Fiorentini read "Not Your Typical Dragon" by Dan Bar-el with teachers Heidi Crowell and Jenna Smith. City Counselor Sullivan read "When Will It Be Spring?" by Catherine Walters alongside teachers Devon Quagenti and Nicole Falwell.
Mayor Fiorentini and City Counselor Sullivan visited Little Sprouts at the invitation of Executive Directors, Maureen Bly and Heather Mohika. As seasoned directors of Little Sprouts, their passion and commitment to young children in the Haverhill community is matched only by their team of dedicated teachers.
In support of Week of the Young Child, Bly commented, “As educators, we are able to make an everlasting impact on the lives of children. Establishing a strong early foundation and love of learning is critical during the early stages of a child’s life. We think it is important for the Mayor and other civic leaders to see quality early education in practice.” Mohika added, “Our hope is that, by reminding them of the importance of our mission, they will keep education amidst their list of top priorities.”
