McGee Wealth Management Becomes the First Corporate Sponsor of OHSU's Circle of Giving
Portland, Oregon (PRWEB) October 10, 2017 -- Linette Dobbins, President/CCO of McGee Wealth Management, Co-Branch Manager of Raymond James Financial Services, and CFP®, is a member of Oregon Health & Science University’s (OHSU) Circle of Giving. McGee Wealth Management has become the first corporate sponsor of the Circle of Giving. The Circle of Giving consists of a group of women dedicated to awarding medical research grants for women’s health research studies. “It is an honor to be the first presenting sponsor. Our company mission and my personal dedication is to give back to the community,” Dobbins says. As a member of the Circle of Giving since 2011, Dobbins has worked to grow a relationship with the group members and help expand the organization.
Established in 2006, the group has sponsored a number of significant projects, including a study led by Philip Copenhaver, Ph.D., the 16th recipient of a Circle of Giving grant, to study a treatment for Alzheimer’s Disease. “Alzheimer’s Disease is a devastating condition for which there is still no effective treatment. Women become more vulnerable to AD after menopause, and estrogen replacement therapy cannot be safely used to treat patients because of unacceptable risk factors,” says Philip Copenhaver, Ph.D., Professor, Cell, Developmental and Cancer Biology with OHSU. With the support of a generous grant from the Circle of Giving, Dr. Copenhaver and his team recently tested an alternative drug called STX, which has been shown to provide many of the benefits of estrogen without its side effects.
The Circle of Giving group typically awards a $125,000 grant each year, funded by membership dues and donations, while also funding smaller research projects.
A once in a lifetime scientific breakthrough in gene therapy research was launched by a 2010 Circle of Giving grant to a team led by Shoukhrat Mitalipov, Ph.D.
In the world of scientific research, doctors and scientists must compete for research grants. With the help of Circle of Giving grants, many research teams are able to begin the process of the research project, which can enable garnering future grants and attention from the scientific community.
