The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommend annual flu vaccines for all those six months of age and older, with only a few exceptions. “Since the timing of flu season can be difficult to predict, it’s important to get flu shots early,” warns Peter Lamelas, MD, CEO, and medical director of MD Now Urgent Care. Although peak season is typically from October through November, the vaccines often take up to two weeks to provide full protection; and if not prevented, influenza can lead to serious, even life-threatening complications. “We would much rather prevent our patients from developing influenza in the first place than to treat them once they develop symptoms,” says Dr. Lamelas.
For those who already exhibit symptoms such as coughing, sneezing, fever, and aches, Dr. Lamelas recommends limiting contact—other than to seek medical care—until 24 hours after any fever has subsided. In certain cases, an antiviral medication may be necessary to limit the severity or shorten the duration of the virus.
Better still, MD Now recommends taking every precaution against acquiring and spreading influenza. Although flu shots generally offer the best protection, additional measures include:
• Washing hands often with soap and water to prevent the spread of germs.
• Covering the nose and mouth with a tissue when sneezing to avoid spreading germs.
• Cleaning and disinfecting any surfaces or objects that may be contaminated.
• Avoiding close contact with others who are sick.
• Staying home from work or school to avoid spreading the illness, if already infected.
