MDA and The Safeway Foundation Team Up to Raise Nearly $300,000 for Families with Muscular Dystrophy
Washington D.C. (PRWEB) September 23, 2016 -- The Muscular Dystrophy Association today announced that more than 120 Safeway stores in its Eastern Division raised $298,411.44 during The Safeway Foundation’s annual “People Living with Disabilities” fundraising campaign to help kids and adults with muscular dystrophy, ALS and related life-threatening diseases live longer and grow stronger.
Safeway stores in the District of Columbia, Maryland, Virginia, Delaware and Florida teamed up this July to collect donations from customers upon checkout. Dollars raised during the annual program will help accelerate progress for people whose abilities to move are compromised — including everyday abilities like walking, running, hugging, talking and even breathing.
“We are grateful to The Safeway Foundation and to Safeway employees and customers who put their strength into supporting hundreds of local MDA families who are desperately counting on us to find treatments and cures for neuromuscular diseases through the simple act of making a donation upon checkout this summer,” said MDA Executive Director Tiffany Tillotson. “With their generosity, we will be able to provide the families we serve with the care they need today, while helping to make tomorrow free from the diseases themselves.”
Contributions from the fundraising campaign will help MDA fund groundbreaking research and provide individuals with life-enhancing programs and services, including state-of-the-art multidisciplinary care at a nationwide network of more than 150 MDA Care Centers. They also help send thousands of kids to “the best week of the year” at MDA Summer Camp - at no cost to their families.
“The Safeway Foundation and Safeway are committed to serving the local communities we call home and assisting people with special needs of all kinds,” said Dan Valenzuela, Safeway Inc. Eastern Division President. “We’re grateful to everyone who participated in the fundraising program this July, and we’re honored to do our part in support of MDA’s shared mission to bring strength, independence and life to families fighting these devastating diseases.”
The “People Living with Disabilities” campaign is just one of the many vital outreach campaigns that The Safeway Foundation and Safeway Inc. stores undertake each year. In 2015 alone, with the generous support of Safeway’s customers, they helped contribute more than $270 million in food and financial support to the many communities they serve, improving the lives of millions of people in the areas of hunger relief, education, cancer research and treatment, and veterans outreach.
