MedHelp to Host Online Chat on How Cancer Treatment Can Affect Heart Health
San Francisco, CA (PRWEB) July 31, 2013 -- Cancer treatment saves lives, but many cancer therapies can have serious cardiovascular side effects, such as heart failure, thromboembolism, severe hypertension and arrhythmias, that patients may not be aware of. On August 1, two cardiologists and an oncologist from Cleveland Clinic’s Cardio-Oncology Center will answer questions live on MedHelp about how some cancer treatments can affect heart health in a free, live health chat called Cancer Therapy: Can It Hurt Your Heart?
“Cancer survival has improved over the years thanks to advances in the form of more effective chemotherapy and radiation treatments. However, some of these treatments are known to cause damage to patients’ hearts unless steps are taken to protect the heart during the cancer treatment,” said Juan Carlos Plana, co-director of Cleveland Clinic’s Cardio-Oncology Center. “We hope this online event will help patients understand who may be at risk and what sort of special medical care they may need.”
Since 1996, the Cleveland Clinic and MedHelp have teamed up to provide patients with outstanding and accurate health advice and care. Currently, Cleveland Clinic doctors answer questions on MedHelp’s Heart Disease Expert Forum, which is used by more than 2 million people annually.
“With the Cleveland Clinic and MedHelp working together in our ‘Ask the Expert’ Heart Disease Forum, we’ve given millions of people vital information about heart disease,” said John de Souza, MedHelp’s president and CEO. “Now we can bring that same level of awareness to the connection between cancer treatment and heart disease, and continue to give patients the information they need to best manage their health.”
