MediaMerge Provides New Technology for St. Louis Science Center
Chelsea, Alabama (PRWEB) December 19, 2013 -- The OMNIMAX is a large format, 70mm film projection system that sits visitors under a five-story, 79-foot in diameter, tilted, domed screen. Dave Gioia, head projectionist at the Science Center (http://www.slsc.org), said the theater has long been a popular attraction.
“It is a major source of revenue for us,” Gioia said. “People enjoy the experience of the dome theater. It has been a major part of our center for some time, but it was time to update its technology.”
MediaMerge Inc.(http://www.mediamerge.com), a Chelsea, Ala., based company, provided the design and installation for the upgrade.
"The museum staff was severely handicapped by an outdated automation system,” Tim Ogletree, systems engineer for MediaMerge. “They were going to great lengths to overcome the limitations and maintain a high standard of presentation. Like most facilities these days, they have to handle a wide range of alternative functions at the drop of a hat. After initial project discussions, it quickly became apparent that the system would not only need to handle the current daily demands, but also have capabilities for future expansion."
Gioia agreed the SLSC needed the ability to do more with its theater.
“This type of technology is constantly improving,” he said. “We wanted to have the best available that would also allow us make future improvements and additions more manageable in the future.”
The technology upgrade included the addition of a ShowSource (http://www.showsourcetech.com) media server, which is capable of delivering visually lossless, high-resolution video content in a wide range of digital formats. The server provides multi-channel sound and video playback as well as automates the theater’s media systems. The ShowSource is controlled using touch-screens and was developed by MediaMerge for specialty cinema presentation.
"The aim of the ShowSource is to offer a platform for automation and control that frees the staff from getting bogged down in the technical aspects of pulling off a professional production and allows them to focus more on the quality and creative details,” Ogletree said. “The superb presentation at the SLSC dome theater is the direct result of top-notch technology combined with the staff's passion for excellence."
Gioia said the MediaMerge technicians were first-rate, complimenting their work from the initial discussions to the completion of the project.
“We could not have asked for a better group,” he said. “They did an outstanding job and were a pleasure to work with during the entire process.”
