Medical Center of Marin Physicians are Department of Transportation (DOT) Certified According to the Guidelines of the National Registry of Certified Medical Examiners
Corte Madera, California (PRWEB) July 16, 2014 -- As of May 21, 2014, all medical certificates issued to interstate truck and bus drivers must come from medical examiners listed on the National Registry. In August of 2005, Congress enacted the Safe, Accountable, Flexible, Efficient Transportation Equity Act which authorized the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) to establish a Certified Registry of Certified Medical Examiners. The national Registry is designed to improve highway safety by producing trained, certified medical examiners who can determine whether a Commercial Motor Vehicle (CMV) driver meets FMCSA standards and guidelines. All regular physicians at Medical Center of Marin (MCoM) were certified well before the May 21st deadline. They also maintain a Certified DOT Trainer on staff and all medical assistants are DOT Urine Drug Screen and Breath Alcohol Test Collection Certified. "We approached this new process as an opportunity to gain as much as we could from this additional training," stated Jessica Mejia, office manager and certified DOT trainer at MCoM. The medical examiner training provided builds on the clinical knowledge of the practitioner and helps them to apply it to the fitness for duty determination required for CMV drivers. MCoM has been serving employers of Marin including many municipalities providing physicals and drug screens for commercial drivers for over 25 years. The specialty at the clinic is Occupational Medicine and with it comes a great deal of responsibility. The objective of the new certification guidelines is to improve highway safety and promote public confidence in the quality of the medical examiners who certify CMV drivers. MCoM accepts this duty and takes these new requirements very seriously. It is through a thorough understanding of these new guidelines that they can better assist their employers in complying with these new requirements.
Training and certification of all medical examiners will be ongoing and all medical examiners must complete a refresher training every five years and recertification testing every 10 years.
