Oakland, CA (PRWEB) March 12, 2015 -- MEDICC Review has launched the Spanish edition of its special issue, Chronic Kidney Disease Hits Agricultural Communities, on this year’s World Kidney Day (MEDICC Review Abril 2014: Enfermedad renal crónica azota comunidades agrícolas). The first peer-reviewed journal to devote an entire issue to chronic kidney disease of uncertain causes (CKDu), MEDICC Review features articles on the global reach of CKDu and its challenges. (http://bit.ly/1GkuUX0) The disease, not attributable to risk factors such as diabetes or hypertension, is hitting poor agricultural communities hard, particularly targeting young male farm laborers in places such as El Salvador, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, Mexico, Sri Lanka, Egypt and India.

Calling for action as well as research on the alarming epidemic, Guest Editor Dr. Wendy Hoy, director of the Centre for Chronic Disease at the University of Queensland notes: “This devastating epidemic demands attention from us all.”

Researchers have yet to agree on the trigger for CKDu or the exact configuration of its risk factors, but it appears factors ranging from deep-rooted poverty and harsh working conditions to excessive exposure to environmental toxins may combine to produce this silent killer.

Dr. Christina Mills, MEDICC Review Managing Editor, is a featured panelist in the webinar “Kidney Health for All” to mark World Kidney Day and presented by the Pan American Health Organization’s Department of Noncommunicable Diseases and Mental Health, in collaboration with the Latin American Society of Nephrology and Hypertension.
