Meet Native American Artist Kevin Red Star at Sorrel Sky During Colorfest Gallery Walk
Durango, CO (PRWEB) July 30, 2015 -- Sorrel Sky Gallery honors renowned Native American painter Kevin Red Star with a one-man show opening at Colorfest Gallery Walk on September 18, 2015 from 5:00 to 9:00 p.m. Red Star, who will be present at the gallery for the opening, showcases new paintings that capture the culture of the 19th century Northern Plains Indians.
Red Star’s canvasses display dynamic portraits, mystical animals, and warriors and dancers in full ceremonial regalia. His representations give way to semiabstract imagery that combines remarkable detail with bold gestures, intense backgrounds and vivid colors. Red Star’s subject matter and painting style merge to create a “New Indian Art.”
Through his energetic and vibrantly colored acrylic paintings, Red Star offers his impressions of daily life for his Crow ancestors. “Indian culture has in the past been ignored to a great extent. It is for me, as well as for many other Indian artists, a rich source of creative expression. An intertwining of my Indian culture with contemporary art expression has given me a greater insight concerning my art,” he said.
Red Star's work has increasingly expressed his self-affirmed role as historian, recorder, and ambassador for his native Crow culture. Surrounded by his extended family, his horses and his ancestral homeland, Red Star has established a unique artistic style that balances his world and his art.
Red Star's paintings are represented in several significant museum collections, including the Smithsonian’s National Museum of the American Indian, CM Russell Museum, Heard Museum, Denver Art Museum, Eiteljorg Museum, Whitney Museum of Western Art, and the Institute of American Indian Arts Museum.
He studied at the Institute of American Indian Arts in Santa Fe, New Mexico and the San Francisco Art Institute in California. Red Star has received Honorary Doctorate degrees from the Rocky Mountain College in Billings, Montana and from the Institute of American Indian Arts in Santa Fe, New Mexico.
Sorrel Sky Gallery owner, Shanan Campbell Wells, offered, “Kevin’s paintings are so richly colorful and filled with dynamic elements that they stimulate both the eye and the imagination.“
Sorrel Sky Gallery’s fresh approach to Western art presents a select collection of contemporary and traditional fine art and jewelry for the discerning collector. Sorrel Sky Gallery was founded in Durango, CO in 2002 and opened its Santa Fe, NM location in 2014. It represents over 75 painters, sculptors and jewelers including bronze artist Star Liana York, painter Billy Schenck, and Ben Nighthorse, among others.
