Meet the Next Boston Mayor on WUMB’s ‘Commonwealth Journal’ from UMass Boston
Boston, MA (PRWEB) August 30, 2013 -- Eleven of the candidates to succeed longtime Boston Mayor Thomas M. Menino will discuss their visions for the city in interviews on Commonwealth Journal, the Sunday evening public affairs program from WUMB 91.9 FM, beginning this weekend.
Codman Square Health Center founder Bill Walczak and state Representative Martin Walsh will be featured on the September 1 episode. Additional candidates will appear each Sunday until the September 24 preliminary election. (A full schedule is below.)
The interviews were recorded at the WUMB studios on the UMass Boston campus. The hopefuls had 30 minutes apiece to discuss their plans; 10 minutes from each interview will be broadcast during Commonwealth Journal, with the full half-hour segments available online.
The candidates spoke with Ira A. Jackson, dean of the McCormack Graduate School of Policy and Global Studies, on issues such as education, public safety, labor relations, and neighborhood development and urban planning.
Mayor Menino’s decision not to seek a sixth term as Boston’s chief executive has created the most wide-open mayoral election in 30 years. With such a crowded field, candidates are seeking ways to share their platforms with Boston voters. Jackson says the interview series embodies UMass Boston’s commitment to civic education.
“To the best of my knowledge, we have the only radio show that's committed to interviewing 11 candidates in the crucial weeks leading up to the preliminary,” Jackson said. “As Boston's only public university, this is exactly what UMass Boston should be doing.”
Commonwealth Journal is an award-winning weekly, public and cultural affairs talk show that airs on WUMB 91.9 FM and on more than two dozen radio stations across Massachusetts.
The full schedule of interviews is below. The sequence of interviews was randomized by computer program:
September 1: Walczak, Walsh; Associate Professor of Political Science Mo Cunningham
September 8: City Councilor Charles Yancey, City Councilor Michael Ross, Dudley Street Neighborhood Initiative Director John Barros
September 15: City Councilor Felix Arroyo, nonprofit executive Charlotte Golar Richie, Suffolk District Attorney Daniel Conley
September 23: TOUCH 106.1 FM co-founder Charles Clemons, City Councilor Rob Consalvo, City Councilor John Connolly
