Melbourne Chiropractor wins Award for Clinical Excellence
Melbourne, Australia (PRWEB) August 22, 2013 -- Greensborough chiropractor, Dr Matthew Holmes, recently won an award for clinical excellence at the Annual Conference of the Australasian Academy of Functional Neurology (AAFN). Dr Holmes practices at the Diamond Valley Brain Centre in Greensborough, Melbourne. The Centre focuses on the treatment of vertigo, dizziness and migraine.
The award, the first of its kind presented by the AAFN, was the “2013 Neurologist of the Year”. While Dr Holmes is a chiropractor and not a medical neurologist, much of his work focuses on the assessment and treatment of neurological disorders, particularly of the balance system.
Dr Holmes recently commented, “Balance disorders are a very common problem in society. Apart from the direct costs of dizziness and vertigo which are thought to be responsible for 4% of hospital emergency department costs in the USA, balance problems are a significant cause of mortality and morbidity in society.”
Balance issues can directly impact upon quality of life for the elderly, where fear of falling can lead to immobility and the consequent loss of fitness and social interaction, not to mention the increased risk of death from falling.
Vestibular dysfunction, a component of balance disorders affecting the inner ear and linked brain areas, frequently produces feeling of vertigo (spinning) and dizziness. It has also been associated with many other problems including learning difficulties, memory issues, and anxiety and depression. Dr Holmes said, “many times people are not even aware that they have a balance problem as they may have no vertigo or dizziness, but they can still be suffering the ill effects.”
In addition to practising at the Diamond Valley Brain Centre, Dr Holmes is a sessional lecturer and tutor for the School of Health Sciences at RMIT University in Melbourne, where he has taught neurology, neurological examination and neurophysiology. He has also published several chapters in scientific textbooks on the balance system and headaches.
