Mental Health Awareness For Nonprofit, Hope For The Warriors, Begins with Education and Training
ANNANDALE, VA (PRWEB) April 30, 2015 -- National nonprofit organization, Hope For The Warriors®, has strengthened their focus on mental health issues for service members, veterans, and military families. During the month of April, the entire staff full-time, part-time, and contract staff was trained in QPR, a suicide prevention strategy. The goal of the training was to ensure that every single staff member within Hope For The Warriors® knew the signs and first steps that need to be taken to help prevent suicide within the military population. Hope For The Warriors® is a national nonprofit dedicated to restoring a sense of self, restoring the family unit, and restoring hope for our service members and our military families.
The technique, QPR, stands for Question, Persuade, Refer. Instruction within QPR includes: suicide myths v. facts; recognizing the warning signs of suicide; verbal, behavioral, and situational clues; the common causes of suicidal behavior; correct questions to ask; techniques to persuade a safe next step; referral techniques; and the effectiveness of following QPR.
The training was conducted by Vicki Lane, MSW, LCSW, a Regional Clinical Social Worker and staff member within Clinical Health & Wellness for Hope For The Warriors®. Lane facilitated training to all Hope For The Warriors® staff members during the organization’s annual Staff Development Conference in April. Lane earned her certification in QPR through Suicide Prevention Resource Center (SPRC). SPRC is supported by a grant from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA).
“Every single one of our staff members has the opportunity to engage with military family members throughout their usual work day and therefore implement the life-saving techniques of QPR,” said Robin Kelleher, Hope For The Warriors® president. “Each staff member is prepared to make a difference in the lives of those that need our help.”
The training conducted within Hope For The Warriors® will also be offered to other nonprofit and corporate partners that work closely with the organization.
“We have a responsibility to utilize this training and expertise and educate groups that share in our mission,” Kelleher said.
