Merchant Marines to be Honored at Miami VA Healthcare System
Miami, Florida (PRWEB) September 24, 2013 -- The Miami VA Healthcare System will be honoring the service and sacrifice of the United States Merchant Marine service at a 10 a.m. ceremony at the Bruce W. Carter VA Medical Center in Miami.
Although not a branch of the military, the U.S. Merchant Marines can be called into service during wartime as an auxiliary of the U.S. Navy to transport cargo and troops. The Merchant Marines have participated in major U.S. conflict from the revolutionary war through the Gulf War. Although they are not combatants, Merchant Marines suffered heavy casualty rates in both World War II and Vietnam.
Merchant Marines are invited to attend the ceremony, which will be highlighted by the raising of the Merchant Marine Flag alongside the five service branch flags in front of the hospital.
