Mercy Health Youngstown Introduces New Technology to Treat AFib
YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (PRWEB) December 05, 2014 -- Mercy Health Youngstown, formerly Humility of Mary Health Partners, completed an atrial fibrillation ablation Nov. 17 using an advanced 3-D heart mapping system developed by Topera Inc. This is the first time this new technology has been used in the tri-county region.
During the procedure Lee Gemma, M.D., and Allen Amorn, M.D., cardiac electrophysiologists at St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital, performed FIRM-Guided Therapy to aid in the treatment of a patient with a serious heart rhythm disorder or atrial fibrillation (AFib). AFib is the most common heart rhythm disorder, affecting millions of Americans. It is a common source of palpitations, dizziness, stroke and death.
Topera’s 3-D mapping system allowed Drs. Gemma and Amorn to identify sources sustaining the arrhythmia specific to the patient. They were then able to use this information to determine immediately how best to deliver therapy. The patient did well, and long-term outcome is expected to be excellent, the physicians report.
