Miami Realtors to Host Hurricane Irma Relief Drive at Hialeah’s Leah Arts District
Miami, FL (PRWEB) September 19, 2017 -- The MIAMI Association of REALTORS® (MIAMI) will be collecting canned goods and supplies for Florida Keys residents impacted by Hurricane Irma during its free live art event — Infusion @ Leah Arts District— from 3-7 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 23 at 1085 East 14th Street in Hialeah. A cargo plane secured by MIAMI and First Service Realty will ship the donated supplies to Marathon the next day.
Hurricane Irma damaged Florida Keys homes and left many Keys residents without power after it made landfall as a Category 4 storm with 130 mph winds in the lower Florida Keys on Sept. 10.
“Florida Keys residents need water, canned goods and supplies to help recover from this major storm,” said Christopher Zoller, the 2017 MIAMI chairman of the board and a Coral Gables Realtor. “We are asking South Florida residents to bring supplies to our Infusion @ Leah Arts District event on Saturday. A cargo plane will fly the donated supplies directly to the Keys on Sunday.”
Supplies needed include:
- Water bottles
- Canned goods
- Flashlights with batteries
- Tarps
- Insect repellent
- Sports drinks
- Adult and baby diapers
- Sunscreen
- Bleach
- Can openers
- Hygiene products
- First-aid kits

Infusion @ Leah Arts District
Infusion @ Leah Arts District is part of MIAMI’s Better Block initiative, which aims to empower local communities and stakeholders on ways to reshape and reactivate neighborhoods. Thanks to support from the National Association of REALTORS® (NAR), MIAMI has partnered with Team Better Block, a Dallas-based organization, on ways to promote and bring vibrancy to South Florida neighborhoods.
“Better cities start with better blocks and we believe the Leah Arts District has the power to become a major gathering place for artists, entrepreneurs and the entire Hialeah community,” Zoller said. “Reshaping the Leah Arts District with new investments and new designs will not only encourage more community connection and commerce, but it will add to Miami’s arts renaissance.”
Once a booming industrial hub, the Leah area in Hialeah is home to thrift stores and a growing number of local artists and entrepreneurs. Hialeah Councilman Paul Hernandez and publicist JennyLee Molina came up with the idea to turn it into an arts district in 2015. Hernandez introduced and helped pass an Artist Live/Work Overlay District hoping to offer a new neighborhood for Miami’s artists. The Leah Arts District runs from East 13th Street to East 17th Street between East 10th and 11th Ave.
The creation of the district came after the incredible success of Miami’s Wynwood neighborhood. Once an industrial hub, Wynwood is known worldwide for its colorful wall murals and ability to attract the world’s best artists. Wynwood’s explosion of art led to major commercial investments. New Wynwood restaurants, shopping centers, and condominiums have broken ground. Today, Wynwood is one of the nation’s hippest destinations for art, food and entertainment.
Saturday’s Event to Feature Live Art, Music and Food
Saturday’s event will include live art, music, food trucks, paella, a domino park, live artists, a kids workshop and more. Miami-based artist Jona Cerwinske — who is renowned for his designs on sports cars such as Lamborghinis with a Sharpie pen — is scheduled to do a custom piece at the event.
Miami artists Grisell Gajano, Rudolph Jean-Louis, Marianela Holly and Minerva Mendez-Freire are competing in an art challenge with the winner painting a street mural during the Sept. 23 event.
