Michigan's Upper Peninsula Travel & Recreation Association Creates New Facebook page after Hacker overtakes original page

IRON MOUNTAIN, Mich. (PRWEB) February 03, 2015 -- A hacker overtook a popular tourism Facebook page this weekend that has forced Michigan’s Upper Peninsula Travel and Recreation Association (UPTRA) to create a new Facebook page, http://www.facebook.com/VisitTheUP.

“When we discovered the attack, we and several other companies and organizations immediately tried to help us regain control of our Facebook presence,” said Tom Nemacheck, director of UPTRA. “The hacker was able to take sole administration of our page and made it impossible for us to remove the harmful material. Unfortunately, our contacts at Facebook have not been able to provide technical support to help us resolve the problem.”

Nemacheck said UPTRA’s only recourse was to disassociate with their earlier Facebook page, which had more than 250,000 likes, and make a new one. Nemacheck encourages past friends of the UPTRA Facebook page to like the new one.

“We apologize for offending our members and tourists who rely on our Facebook page for information,” said Nemacheck. “This page is about celebrating and highlighting one of the most beautiful and wholesome places in America, and – regardless of what hoops we need to jump through or obstacles we face – we’ll see that restored.” Nemacheck added that he and UPTRA members are going to continue to work with Facebook to prevent future hacker attacks to their new page or the Facebook pages of other businesses. “Our reputations and integrity are too valuable to be hurt by Internet pirates.”
