Miller Public Adjusters Advises Florida Homeowners to Prepare for Upcoming Hurricane Season
Tampa, FL (PRWEB) April 27, 2015 -- Some of the country's top meteorologists and weather experts are predicting a quiet, below-average hurricane season -- however, that doesn't mean Florida homeowners and business owners should be letting their guard down, says David Miller, Owner and Licensed Public Adjuster at Miller Public Adjusters.
According to Bay News 9 (4/14/15), Colorado State University's recently-released predictions for the 2015 Atlantic Hurricane Season state that this year will see "one of the least active seasons since the middle of the 20th century." The report's forecasts call for seven named storms, three of which will be hurricanes, and one major hurricane of Category 3 or above.
While many Florida residents might find this news as a relief, Miller explains that it's still crucial to prepare for the worst regardless of what forecasts predict. For example, in 1992, a year that was predicted to be extremely quiet, Category 5 Hurricane Andrew hit Florida.
"In my opinion, the yearly prediction for the Atlantic Hurricane Season is a useful guide for travelers and businesses, but it is in no way an exact science that can accurately predict mother nature," Miller says.
Miller advises all homeowners living in Florida to invest in a flood insurance policy, as most homeowner's insurance policies don't cover flood damage. Additionally, it's a good idea to have an emergency plan of action in place.
"The main goal for those in a coastal area is to have an emergency plan as well as take precautionary measures to protect your property in case of a sudden emergency," he says. "It is best to talk to your insurance agent to make sure you have adequate homeowners insurance, as well as a separate policy for flood insurance if necessary."
Another important step that homeowners should take is to consider hiring a public adjuster, according to Miller. If your home does become damaged in a tropical storm, having a public adjuster who works for you and not your insurance company can be a highly-valuable source of representation.
"When a tropical storm or hurricane devastates your property, it is crucial you have someone protecting your interests in restoring your damaged home or business," he says. "We assist in documenting, estimating, and negotiating your insurance claim after a loss. As the property owner, your goal is to have your interests protected in the process of adjusting the loss. When you hire a licensed public adjuster, they work for you, not the insurance company. They manage the claim process and maximize your claim settlement based on your policy."
