Milton Hershey School Students Break Ground on New Home
Hershey, Pa. (PRWEB) December 18, 2013 -- Milton Hershey School® advanced carpentry students in Hershey, Pa. recently broke ground on a new staff home. Students in Mr. Richard Mattis’s Residential Framing carpentry class have started working on the home that will take two years to complete.
“At the school, we’re more like a family. We’re out here providing for the community by building a staff home for our project of the year,” MHS junior Elijah Shirk said.
Director of Career/Technical Education Mr. Robert Kemmery said there is a measurable value in a project like this for MHS Construction/Carpentry students, and the experiential learning knowledge they will gain for future endeavors within the construction industry.
“This is one of those projects in which not only do the students get the foundation skills by listening to their instructor and reading textbooks, but they also actually get to come and apply their learning in a real setting,” Kemmery said.
The School’s CTE program is made up of 11 different career pathways, ranging from Construction/Carpentry to Health Science to Law, Public Safety, and Security. The School offers 35 state and/or nationally accredited certifications. For example, in the Carpentry/Construction pathway, students can earn the OSHA Safety and Health CareerSafe certification.
Through the many options offered at the School, students can go straight into a meaningful career or a college or technical program.
“That vision is alive today in our CTE programs, which focus on building students’ skills to prepare them to go straight into the workforce or a postsecondary education program. We are particularly proud of the fact that each graduate will leave MHS with at least one industry-recognized certification,” Kemmery said.
