Milwaukee, Wisconsin (PRWEB) November 21, 2013 -- Car accident lawyer Karl Gebhard, of Gebhard Law Office, wants to remind drivers in Milwaukee to drive carefully in snow and on icy roads.
Every winter brings icy road conditions to Milwaukee and throughout the entire state of Wisconsin. If the roads appear to be slippery, then we all need to slow down,” said Karl Gebhard.
Just this month, an accident in Marathon County, WI believed to be caused by black ice, caused a school bus to collide with another automobile. The Wisconsin Rapids Tribune reported that 1 person was found dead and another 4 were injured in the crash.
Black ice is very dangerous because, unlike snow, it is nearly invisible on the roadway. Often times it appears to look like a harmless puddle of water or goes entirely unseen as it can blend in with the pavement.
Gebhard Law Office offers the following safely tips for driving on snowy and icy roads:
1. Slow down and accelerate slowly. The faster a car is moving, the longer it will take for the vehicle to come to a stop. When accelerating on snow or ice, a driver needs to be mindful that slipping or sliding will almost certainly occur if you accelerate to quickly.
2. Leave room between your vehicle and the vehicle in front of you to give extra time for your vehicle to come to a stop. Vehicles on icy and snowy roads need extra time, and extra distance to come to a complete stop.
3. Remain calm under pressure. If a car begins to slide, a driver should slowly take their foot off the accelerator and apply the brakes slowly. Also, don't jerk the wheel or make other sudden movements as the vehicle will not respond the way it does on dry roads.
4. Brake correctly. Brake early and slowly, without slamming on the brakes. Drivers with anti-lock brakes should press the pedal down firmly and hold it. Drivers without anti-lock brakes should pump the pedal gently.
5. Stay in control of your vehicle. Drivers who skid and are going off the road should try to steer towards something that will help to will minimize the damage, like an empty area.
6. Heed to warning signs. Ice forms faster on bridges and overpasses. Black ice typically forms in the early morning or at night when the temperature drops below or at freezing. Lastly, black ice is commonly found on roads blocked from the sun by trees or other obstacles.
7. Pay attention to what other drivers are doing. Watching the movements of other vehicles while driving may help to alert you of problems more quickly, giving you time to react safely.
“The law in Wisconsin requires drivers to maintain control of their vehicles at all times,” says Karl Gebhard. “Knowing how to drive on snow and ice can help prevent a car accident and avoid serious injury or even death.”
